COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Social Work (M.S.W.) program is designed to prepare students for advanced professional practice in a wide range of social service and community-based settings. One of the key highlights of the program is the availability of Advanced Standing for students who already hold a Bachelor of Social Work (B.S.W.) from an accredited institution, allowing them to complete the degree in an accelerated one-year format. Students in the program gain extensive practical experience through field placements and internships, where they may work with diverse populations such as individuals experiencing domestic violence, children, older adults, people with mental illness, individuals facing chronic or acute health conditions, and those affected by substance abuse or HIV/AIDS. In addition to direct practice experience, students also engage in professional activities such as caseload management, grant writing, program development, and the implementation of evidence-based social work practices. They may also participate in research activities, including designing surveys, conducting qualitative and quantitative studies, assisting faculty, presenting at conferences, and building professional networks. The program offers a wide variety of electives and field experiences, allowing students to tailor their education according to their specific interests and career goals. Financial support is available through scholarships such as the Fannie Belle Gaupp Scholarship and the Social Work/Title IV-E Child Welfare Scholarship. Students without a B.S.W. enter a two-year generalist track that builds foundational and advanced social work skills. Upon graduation, students are eligible for licensure as a Licensed Master Social Worker (L.M.S.W.), and with additional supervised experience, they may pursue Licensed Clinical Social Worker (L.C.S.W.) status. Career opportunities for M.S.W. graduates are broad and include roles in child welfare, mental health, healthcare, schools, aging services, clinical practice, and nonprofit or government administration. Common coursework includes Social Work Administration and Management, Advanced Policy Analysis, Program and Practice Evaluation, Death, Dying and Bereavement, Foster Care and Adoption Planning, and Human Diversity and Multicultural Practice, all of which prepare students for effective, ethical, and culturally responsive professional practice.
