COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master’s program in Sub-Antarctic Biocultural Conservation Biology provides students with an interdisciplinary education focused on environmental science, conservation, sustainability, and the relationship between human cultures and natural ecosystems. The program offers access to advanced research facilities and institutes that support innovative scientific study and environmental problem-solving. Students benefit from the Life Sciences Complex, a sustainability-focused facility with Gold-level Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design certification that includes aquatics laboratories and climate-controlled rooftop research greenhouses for biological and ecological studies. Additional research opportunities are available through specialized centers such as the Center for Network Neuroscience, which focuses on mammalian central nervous system cell research and studies related to pattern generation, storage, and recognition. The BioDiscovery Institute supports multidisciplinary research connecting sustainable plant production, metabolic engineering, and new material development, emphasizing practical applications and collaborative large-scale projects that address market and environmental challenges. Students may also engage with the Center for Watershed and Reservoir Assessment and Management, which conducts research on water resource assessment and sustainable environmental management practices, as well as the Advanced Environmental Research Institute, where multidisciplinary teams study the environmental impacts of human activities and develop scientific, engineering, policy, and educational solutions to environmental issues. The program strongly supports qualified students through competitive teaching and research assistantships funded by faculty research grants, helping students gain professional experience while supporting their academic progress. Coursework combines ecological science, ethics, and conservation studies through classes such as Sub-Antarctic Biocultural Conservation, Environmental Ethics, Contemporary Topics in Environmental Science and Ecology, Tracing Darwin’s Path, and Environmental Impact Assessment. Students also complete a master’s thesis, allowing them to conduct in-depth independent research related to environmental conservation and biocultural studies.
