COURSE CURRICULUM
The Master’s in Geography at the University of North Texas offers both a professional non-thesis option and a research-focused thesis option, allowing students to choose a pathway that best matches their career and academic goals. The professional master’s degree emphasizes analytical skill development and applied geographic knowledge, with opportunities to focus on areas such as water resources, health and medical geography, business geography, and other applied research fields. The research master’s program is designed for students interested in developing independent research expertise through the completion of a master’s thesis under faculty supervision. The curriculum combines physical and human geography through advanced coursework, research activities, teaching experience, and internship opportunities that help students connect theoretical knowledge with practical applications. Students have access to specialized laboratories dedicated to archaeological science, earth science, geology, geomorphology, hydrology, ecosystems, remote sensing, and geographic information systems (GIS), providing hands-on experience with modern geographic technologies and research methods. Collaboration opportunities with faculty from the School of Public Health at the UNT Health Science Center and environmental science specialists further strengthen the interdisciplinary nature of the program. Additional academic support is available through specialized workshops and the Thesis Boot Camp offered by the Toulouse Graduate School, many of which are accessible online for convenience. The program prepares students with an in-depth understanding of geological, environmental, atmospheric, social, and spatial systems while teaching them to analyze geographic locations using environmental characteristics, climate data, population patterns, and landscape features. Students also study cultural demographics, political systems, sustainability initiatives, and alternative energy programs, helping them understand the relationship between society and the environment. Career opportunities for graduates include roles as geographers, urban and regional planners, economists, geoscientists, anthropologists, archaeologists, environmental analysts, and GIS specialists. Coursework includes research design and geographic applications, statistical research methods in geography, foundations of geographic thought, and GIS for applied research, giving students strong analytical, technical, and research capabilities for professional or academic advancement.
