COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master’s in Emergency Management and Disaster Science at the University of North Texas is a nationally recognized program that prepares students to address complex disaster and emergency challenges through advanced research, practical training, and community-focused resilience strategies. The department’s faculty members are highly respected in the field, having received multiple national awards from the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s Higher Education Program, secured significant research funding from the National Science Foundation, and served in advisory roles for organizations such as the Texas Division of Emergency Management and FEMA. The department is also home to the Emergency Administration and Planning program, established in 1983 as the nation’s first bachelor’s degree program in emergency management, highlighting UNT’s long-standing leadership in disaster and emergency studies. Students receive strong academic support through resources such as the Graduate Student Writing Support office, which helps strengthen professional and academic writing skills, and the Office of Research Consulting, which provides assistance with statistical analysis and research methods. Additional professional development opportunities are available through the Toulouse Graduate School®, including workshops and boot camps focused on thesis and dissertation preparation, many of which are accessible online for flexibility and convenience. The program places a strong emphasis on understanding the human dimensions of hazards and disasters while promoting community resilience and long-term recovery strategies across a wide range of threats. Graduates pursue careers in roles such as Emergency Management Coordinator, Resilience Coordinator, Emergency Management Analyst, GIS Applications Administrator, and Business Continuity Specialist, with many employed by organizations including FEMA, the Texas Division of Emergency Management, the North Central Texas Council of Governments, and county emergency management offices in Dallas and Tarrant County. Coursework includes disaster research methods, applied statistics in disaster science, disaster response challenges, community recovery and resilience, international disaster relief, and emergency management theory and practice, providing students with a comprehensive understanding of emergency preparedness, response, and recovery.
