COURSE CURRICULUM

The Clinical Mental Health Counseling track in the Master’s program at the University of North Texas is widely recognized as one of the leading counselor preparation programs in the United States and is consistently regarded as one of the strongest programs in Texas. The program is designed to develop highly competent, ethical, and professional counselors through rigorous academic training and extensive practical preparation. Many faculty members are nationally recognized experts in counseling and have received honors and recognition from major professional organizations such as the American Counseling Association, the Association for Counselor Education and Supervision, the Texas Counseling Association, and Chi Sigma Iota International Honor Society. The program also enriches student learning through annual conferences where nationally known speakers present current research, trends, and professional perspectives on counseling practice and mental health care. A major strength of the program is the UNT Center for Play Therapy, which promotes children’s emotional and developmental growth through play-based therapeutic approaches and serves as a hub for training, research, publications, clinical services, and scholarships, while also functioning as a resource center for play therapy literature. The program emphasizes both academic development and personal growth, helping students build a strong professional identity as counselors. It is accredited by the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP), ensuring that it meets or exceeds national standards for counselor education. Graduates are prepared to work in a wide variety of professional settings, including community mental health centers, hospitals and medical facilities, faith-based organizations, residential and substance use treatment centers, and college or university counseling centers. The curriculum includes advanced coursework such as ethical and legal issues in counseling, diagnosis and treatment planning, trauma and crisis intervention, addiction counseling, career development, and leadership in clinical mental health counseling, all of which equip students with the knowledge and skills needed for effective practice in diverse counseling environments.
