COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master’s in Computer Science at the University of North Texas is designed to provide advanced academic training and flexible study options that align with students’ professional and research goals. The program includes access to specialized research lab spaces such as the Centers for Information and Cybersecurity and Net-Centric Software, along with 13 dedicated research laboratories that support both faculty and student projects. A major strength of the program is the Center for Information and Cyber Security (CICS), which has contributed to UNT earning recognition as a National Security Agency and Department of Homeland Security “Center of Academic Excellence in Information Assurance Education” and “Center for Academic Excellence in Research,” placing it among the leading institutions in computer security education in the United States. Faculty research interests span a wide range of cutting-edge computing fields, including theoretical computer science, databases, visualization, game programming, wired and wireless networks, cybersecurity, artificial intelligence, natural language processing, computer systems architecture, agent-based systems, collaborative learning, parallel and distributed processing, and numerical analysis. Students may receive financial support through teaching and research assistantships, with application and deadline details available through the department. The program also provides practical computing infrastructure, including hosted virtual machines running Ubuntu Linux with remote SSH access, as well as tools such as Apache web servers and MySQL database servers to support hands-on learning and development. Strong industry connections are maintained through partnerships with local and national companies and guidance from an Industrial Advisory Board composed of representatives from leading high-tech firms. These relationships help ensure that the curriculum remains relevant to current industry needs and emerging technologies. Students also benefit from a curriculum that includes advanced courses such as artificial intelligence, computer forensics, computer security, cryptography, database systems, and compiler design, providing a strong foundation for careers in software development, cybersecurity, data science, research, and advanced computing fields.
