COURSE CURRICULUM
The Master of Fine Arts in Studio Art with a concentration in Photography is an advanced graduate program that combines creative research, contemporary theory, and intensive studio practice to prepare students for professional careers in photography and related visual arts fields. The program culminates in a one-person exhibition that showcases each student’s artistic development, conceptual depth, and technical expertise. Students benefit from access to a wide range of professional facilities and equipment, including traditional wet and alternative process darkrooms, Wacom desktop and Cintiq tablets, AI-based image editing and generation tools, and Epson printers capable of producing large-format prints up to 44 inches wide. All M.F.A. students are also provided with private studio spaces in the UNT Art Annex Building, which opened in 2022 and supports focused creative exploration and production. The program emphasizes intellectual and artistic growth, encouraging students to refine their individual creative practices while preparing them for long-term contributions to visual culture and contemporary art. Graduates pursue diverse careers across education, fine arts, commercial photography, and creative industries. In education, graduates may teach photography at universities, colleges, museums, community centers, or through workshops and artist residencies. In the fine arts sector, many exhibit and sell original work through galleries, exhibitions, and private collections. Others pursue professional photography careers in commercial, editorial, fashion, portrait, sports, wedding, or photojournalism fields. The degree also supports advancement into creative leadership positions such as art director, creative director, photo editor, or gallery manager. Additional opportunities exist in technical and instructional roles including photography instruction, lab management, equipment specialization, and visual effects production. Entrepreneurial pathways are also encouraged, with graduates launching freelance businesses, studios, and creative consulting practices. The curriculum includes courses such as Teaching Practices, Graduate Seminar, Professional Practices for the Studio Artist, Creative Project, Exhibition, and Topics in Studio Art, all designed to strengthen artistic, technical, and professional capabilities. Overall, the program equips students with advanced creative, technical, and critical thinking skills needed to succeed in both traditional photography and emerging visual media industries.
