COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master’s in Philosophy at the University of North Texas is an internationally recognized program with a strong emphasis on environmental philosophy and applied ethical inquiry, offering students a unique opportunity to engage with pressing global issues through rigorous philosophical study. The department is home to the first journal in the field, Environmental Ethics, founded in 1979, as well as the Center for Environmental Philosophy, both of which establish UNT as a leading institution in this area of study. It also hosts the world’s first field station in environmental philosophy, science, and policy located at Cape Horn, Chile, providing a distinctive research setting for interdisciplinary and field-based philosophical work. The program is further distinguished by having the country’s only research group focused on the philosophy of impact, along with active research initiatives such as the Philosophy of Water Project, the Philosophy of Food Project, and the Philosophy for Children Project, all of which explore philosophical questions in practical and socially relevant contexts. Students also benefit from engagement with leaders of non-governmental organizations who participate in academic dialogues, sharing real-world insights on community empowerment, sustainability, and development while collaborating with scholars in anthropology and environmental philosophy. Graduate student life is supported by the Philosophy and Religion Graduate Student Association (PRGSA), which fosters academic community, represents student interests, and encourages collaboration between faculty and students through events and discussions. The program prepares students for a variety of career paths, including doctoral study in philosophy and related disciplines, as well as careers in law, journalism, public policy, environmental organizations, and other public, private, or nonprofit sectors. Coursework includes Environmental Philosophy, Asian Philosophies and Religions, Feminist Philosophy, Social and Political Philosophy, Ethical Theory, and Philosophy of Science and Technology, providing a broad and flexible foundation in both traditional and contemporary philosophical thought.
