COURSE CURRICULUM
The Master of Education in Higher Education at the University of North Texas is one of the most established higher education programs in the Southwest, with more than 1,000 master’s and doctoral alumni serving in leadership positions at colleges and universities across the United States and internationally. The program offers flexible learning options to accommodate different career goals and schedules, including a standard master’s degree with specialization tracks in student affairs, community college leadership, or general administration; a fully online option for greater accessibility; and a Master’s Cohort Program in College Student Personnel that focuses on student affairs while providing immediate consideration for graduate assistantship opportunities within UNT’s Division of Student Affairs. The cohort model allows selected students to complete coursework full time while gaining valuable professional experience through assistantships over a two-year period. The program emphasizes the development of leadership, assessment, advocacy, and educational intervention skills while teaching students how to apply and critique higher education theories in practical settings. Students gain expertise in designing and evaluating programs, using assessment results to improve institutional effectiveness, and understanding the organizational, historical, and financial foundations of higher education administration. UNT’s College of Education is highly ranked regionally and nationally and is recognized for excellence in preparing educators, administrators, counselors, and student affairs professionals. Faculty members are accomplished scholars who have published numerous books, monographs, and refereed journal articles, while the college also manages millions of dollars annually in externally funded research, outreach, and instructional projects. Graduates are prepared for entry-level and mid-management careers in areas such as student life, housing, career services, multicultural centers, alumni relations, academic advising, international student services, financial aid, institutional research, and business affairs. Coursework includes student risk management, finance and budgeting in higher education, history and philosophy of higher education, organization and administration of higher education, educational statistics, and student demographics, providing students with strong leadership, analytical, and administrative preparation for careers in higher education institutions.A degree in history provides students with valuable knowledge and transferable skills that prepare them for a wide range of careers across many industries and professions. While studying history, students learn how to carefully analyze and evaluate evidence, think critically about complex issues, communicate clearly and persuasively, and understand diverse cultures, perspectives, and historical experiences. These abilities are highly valued in both professional and academic environments because they strengthen research, problem-solving, writing, and decision-making skills. Many history graduates directly apply their academic training to careers as historians, museum professionals, historical interpreters, researchers, educators, writers, archivists, and documentary filmmakers, where they use historical knowledge to preserve, interpret, and communicate information about the past. According to the American Historical Association, history graduates are employed in nearly every professional field, including finance, healthcare, community services, public administration, and nonprofit organizations. A significant number of history majors also pursue careers in business administration, management, sales, law, and public policy because the discipline develops strong communication, leadership, and analytical thinking abilities that employers seek in competitive workplaces. In addition, a history degree serves as excellent preparation for graduate and professional study in areas such as higher education, journalism, law, international relations, public policy, and political science. Overall, studying history helps students build adaptable intellectual and professional skills that can be applied in countless career paths while also deepening their understanding of society, culture, politics, and human behavior across time.
