COURSE CURRICULUM

The University of North Texas Social Work program combines academic excellence with extensive real-world experience to prepare students for meaningful careers helping individuals, families and communities. Through service-learning projects integrated into introductory and practice courses, students apply classroom knowledge directly to real-life situations, gaining valuable hands-on experience early in their studies. The program is accredited by the Council on Social Work Education, demonstrating that it meets high national standards for quality and professional preparation in social work education. Students benefit from internship opportunities in a variety of professional settings, including women’s shelters, child welfare organizations, hospitals, mental health and substance abuse treatment centers, homeless shelters, aging programs and agencies supporting individuals experiencing relationship violence, AIDS or chronic illnesses. Scholarships such as the Fannie Belle Gaupp Scholarship and the Social Work/Title IV-E Child Welfare Scholarship help support students financially while they complete their education. The department also encourages leadership, networking and community involvement through organizations such as Preserve UNTil Success Happens (PUSH), the Social Work Student Association and the Phi Alpha Honor Society. Coursework emphasizes communication, ethics, diversity, policy and professional practice through classes such as Introduction to Social Work, Foundations of Interviewing and Interpersonal Skills, Human Diversity for the Helping Professions, Ethics and Professionalism in Practice, Child Welfare Practice and Services, and Policies, Issues and Programs in Social Welfare. Graduates are prepared for careers in child welfare and family services, schools, hospitals, nonprofit organizations, criminal justice systems, mental health centers, substance abuse programs and government agencies. UNT’s Social Work program equips students with the compassion, professionalism and practical skills needed to advocate for vulnerable populations and positively impact society.
