The Medical Laboratory Sciences program benefits from strong support within the biological sciences and chemistry departments, where faculty members are dedicated to high-quality teaching and have received recognition for their academic and professional contributions. Students are supported financially through several scholarship opportunities, including the Gladys Crawford Award, which helps them pursue their education and training in the field. The program also encourages active student involvement through professional and pre-professional organizations such as Lambda Alpha Beta, a student group for Medical Laboratory Sciences majors, as well as honor societies like Beta Beta Beta Biological Honor Society and Alpha Epsilon Delta Health Pre-Professional Honor Society, both of which provide additional opportunities for research, leadership, and academic development. Students interested in advancing toward medical careers can also take advantage of a collaborative program with the UNT Health Science Center at Fort Worth, which integrates undergraduate study with medical school preparation. The program’s laboratory facilities, located in the Chemistry Building and the Life Sciences Complex, are equipped with state-of-the-art technology that enables students to conduct research on cell structure, microorganisms, and other critical biological systems. Career preparation is a major focus of the program, with graduates trained to perform essential laboratory tests on blood, tissue, and body fluids that assist in the diagnosis and treatment of diseases. Their technical expertise also includes operating and maintaining laboratory instruments and ensuring quality control in clinical environments. Medical laboratory scientists find employment in a wide range of settings, including blood banks, hospitals and clinics, independent diagnostic laboratories, physician offices, health maintenance organizations, insurance companies, pharmaceutical firms, research laboratories, coroner’s offices, and specialized government and nonprofit organizations such as the armed forces, Peace Corps, Red Cross, U.S. Public Health Service, and Veterans Affairs hospitals. Some professionals also move into roles in education, laboratory equipment sales, product development, and quality assurance, making this a versatile and impactful healthcare career path.
