COURSE CURRICULUM

The Forensic Science Chemistry degree at the University of North Texas combines advanced chemistry education with specialized forensic science training to prepare students for careers in forensic laboratories, criminal investigations, scientific research, and graduate study. The program offers numerous opportunities for undergraduate research, allowing students to gain valuable hands-on laboratory experience, strengthen preparation for graduate school, qualify for internships, and even contribute to scientific publications. Students learn from highly respected faculty members who have earned national and international recognition for their research and scholarship in areas such as analytical, inorganic, organic, and physical chemistry, along with interdisciplinary specialties including chemical biology, materials chemistry, and chemistry education. The forensic science program is especially distinguished because it is one of only 38 programs nationwide certified by the American Academy of Forensic Sciences, reflecting high standards of quality and excellence in forensic education. Students work with advanced equipment similar to that used in leading crime laboratories across the country, helping them develop practical technical skills and professional laboratory experience. Facilities include a modern criminalistics laboratory dedicated to fingerprint analysis, ballistic examination, and laser analysis, giving students direct exposure to modern forensic investigation techniques. In addition, the Chemistry program holds accreditation from the American Chemical Society, demonstrating that it meets or exceeds rigorous national standards for excellence in chemistry education. Graduates often work as forensic chemists and forensic biologists in crime laboratories where they apply principles of chemistry, biology, and physical science to analyze evidence collected during criminal investigations. Responsibilities may include analyzing physical evidence, preparing scientific reports, offering expert testimony in court, and assisting law enforcement personnel in properly collecting and preserving evidence. The degree can also support careers in specialized forensic fields such as forensic pathology, forensic anthropology, forensic entomology, forensic psychiatry, forensic odontology, and forensic engineering. Coursework includes subjects such as Forensic Chemistry, Biochemistry I, Instrumental Analysis, Forensic Science Analysis, Biomedical Criminalistics, and Principles of Forensic Science, all of which help students develop strong analytical reasoning, laboratory expertise, scientific problem-solving abilities, and technical skills required for professional success in forensic science and related scientific industries.
