COURSE CURRICULUM
The Forensic Biochemistry degree at the University of North Texas provides students with advanced scientific training, modern laboratory experience, and specialized forensic knowledge that prepare them for careers in forensic science, criminal investigation, and laboratory research. Students gain hands-on experience using the same advanced technology and analytical equipment found in leading crime laboratories across the nation, helping them develop practical technical skills that are directly relevant to the forensic science profession. Program facilities include a modern criminalistics laboratory focused on fingerprint analysis, ballistic examination, and laser-based forensic analysis, allowing students to work with real investigative methods and technologies used in professional forensic environments. The curriculum is carefully designed around recommendations from the National Institute of Justice and also prepares students for the American Board of Criminalistics certification examination, strengthening professional readiness and career competitiveness. Students are taught by nationally certified faculty members who are active researchers in forensic science and have served as expert witnesses in high-profile court cases, giving students direct exposure to real-world forensic applications and professional expertise. The program is especially distinguished because it is one of only 35 programs accredited by the American Academy of Forensic Sciences, demonstrating that it meets or exceeds rigorous national standards for excellence in forensic science education. Faculty members also work closely with students to secure internships that align with their career interests, with opportunities available in crime laboratories, crime scene investigation units, forensic anthropology, forensic chemistry laboratories, and forensic DNA and genetics laboratories. Graduates often work as forensic chemists or forensic biologists in crime labs where they analyze evidence collected during criminal investigations using principles of physical and natural sciences. Responsibilities may include examining physical evidence, interpreting scientific findings, providing expert testimony in court, and assisting law enforcement with evidence collection and preservation procedures. The degree can also lead to specialized forensic careers in fields such as forensic pathology, forensic anthropology, forensic entomology, forensic psychiatry, forensic odontology, and forensic engineering. Coursework includes subjects such as Cell Biology, Biochemistry and Molecular Biology of the Gene, Biomedical Criminalistics, Forensic Microscopy, Physical Chemistry, and Principles of Forensic Science, all of which help students build strong scientific, analytical, and investigative skills essential for forensic and scientific careers.
