COURSE CURRICULUM

The University of North Texas Sociology program offers students a comprehensive and research-focused education that prepares them to understand and address complex social issues at local, national and global levels. Students pursuing the B.A. complete 30 semester hours in sociology, while B.S. students complete 36 hours with additional emphasis on research and analytical methods. Coursework explores diverse topics including environmental sociology, medical sociology, race and ethnic relations, sex and gender, gerontology, developing societies, sociological theory, research methods and statistics, helping students understand both the theoretical and practical applications of sociology in modern society. Faculty members are highly accomplished scholars whose books, articles and research reports have been recognized nationally and internationally. Their work has received funding from organizations such as the National Science Foundation, the Department of Health and Human Services and the Commonwealth Fund, and they have conducted research in countries including Ghana, Guatemala, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Mexico, Malawi, Sweden and Togo. Research interests within the department include demography, environmental sociology, sociology of disasters, aging, economic sociology, sustainable societies and social change. Faculty and students have also contributed to improving health and social services in communities facing issues such as illness, crime, substance abuse and teenage pregnancy. Ranked among the top sociology programs nationally and regionally, UNT prepares graduates for careers in social work, counseling, criminal justice, community services, marketing, healthcare, nonprofit organizations, government agencies and research positions. Many graduates also continue into graduate school, law school or professional training programs. Courses such as Sociology of Sport, Drugs, Crime and Society, Sociology of Religion, Sociology of Sexuality, Immigration and Race in Contemporary U.S., and Race, Class, Gender and Ethnicity provide students with a broad understanding of society and human interaction in a rapidly changing world.
