COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Science in Rehabilitation Studies at the University of North Texas combines academic coursework with practical community involvement to prepare students for rewarding careers helping individuals with disabilities and other challenges achieve independence and improved quality of life. Students learn from experienced faculty members who have worked as counselors and rehabilitation professionals in hospitals, mental health centers, nonprofit organizations and state agencies, giving students valuable insight into real-world rehabilitation services and client care. The program emphasizes both classroom instruction and hands-on learning, allowing students to develop practical skills in counseling, advocacy, communication, case management and service coordination. Students can also participate in organizations such as the North Texas Rehabilitation Association and Eagle Peer Recovery, which provide leadership opportunities, networking and professional development experiences. UNT’s Wellness and Employment Learning Lab, known as UNTWELL, offers additional experiential learning opportunities by helping students support individuals in achieving personal, educational and employment goals while gaining direct rehabilitation-related experience. The university also provides strong academic and career support through the Career Center, Learning Center and professional academic advisors who assist students with internships, employment preparation, study skills and academic planning. Scholarships are available through the College of Public Affairs and Health Sciences and the Department of Rehabilitation and Health Services to help students pursue their education. Graduates enter a field with growing demand for qualified rehabilitation professionals, and many UNT alumni hold leadership positions with organizations such as the Texas Health and Human Services Commission, the Texas Council for Developmental Disabilities and the Texas Workforce Commission. Career opportunities are available in addiction treatment centers, hospitals, clinics, mental health facilities, disability accommodation programs, veteran affairs centers, insurance companies, independent living organizations, probation and parole offices and federal or state rehabilitation agencies. Coursework may include Disability and Society, Case Management in Rehabilitation, Rehabilitation Service Delivery Systems, Physical and Psychosocial Aspects of Disability, Introduction to Psychiatric Rehabilitation and Microcounseling. With its strong focus on practical experience, professional development and compassionate service, UNT’s Rehabilitation Studies program prepares students for impactful careers improving the lives of individuals and communities.
