COURSE CURRICULUM
The Materials Science and Engineering program at the University of North Texas offers students access to one of the most advanced analytical characterization facilities in the country, enabling hands-on training with state-of-the-art equipment used in cutting-edge scientific and industrial applications. Students also benefit from extensive research infrastructure, including the Materials Research Facility, as well as specialized centers such as the Advanced Materials and Manufacturing Processes Institute (AMMPI) and the Center for Friction Stir Processing, which support innovative research and applied engineering solutions. The department is housed in approximately 25,000 square feet at UNT’s Discovery Park, with an additional 40,000 square feet of expandable space, reflecting its capacity for continued growth and technological advancement. Graduates of the program enter a strong job market with competitive starting salaries and are highly sought after across industries such as automotive, chemical, aerospace, microelectronics, magnetic storage, transportation, sports technology, defense, forensics, and manufacturing. The degree also provides a solid foundation for advanced study at the master’s or doctoral level in materials science and related fields. Core coursework includes Bonding and Structure, Transport Phenomena in Materials, Electrical, Optical and Magnetic Properties of Materials, Materials Processing, Materials Selection and Performance, and introductory studies exploring why materials matter, all designed to build a strong understanding of how materials behave and how they are engineered for real-world applications.
