One of the fastest-growing career areas for geography students is geospatial technology, where professionals use Geographic Information Systems (GIS), remote sensing, digital mapping, and spatial analysis to solve real-world problems involving land use, transportation, infrastructure, environmental monitoring, and business development. Graduates may pursue careers as GIS Analysts, cartographers, remote sensing specialists, urban planners, hydrologists, climatologists, ecologists, conservationists, agricultural managers, natural resource managers, or land economists. Geography graduates also work in emergency management organizations such as Federal Emergency Management Agency, environmental consulting firms, government agencies, nonprofit organizations, and national park systems including the National Park Service and United States Forest Service. Some graduates choose service-oriented roles such as volunteering with the Peace Corps or continue into academic and scientific careers as researchers and university professors. The degree’s interdisciplinary nature allows students to study both physical geography and human geography, helping them understand ecosystems, environmental change, energy systems, climate patterns, population dynamics, and cultural and social interactions. Coursework includes classes such as Foundations of Geographic Research, Culture, Environment and Society, Field Methods and Mapping, Ecosystems: Structure, Function and Services, Our Energy Futures, and Earth Science.
