COURSE CURRICULUM

The Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology program at University of North Texas prepares students for careers supporting individuals with communication, speech, language, hearing, and balance disorders while also providing a strong foundation for graduate and professional study. The bachelor’s degree serves as a pre-professional pathway for students planning to pursue graduate education in speech-language pathology or audiology and may also lead to positions as speech pathology assistants or audiology assistants. Students interested in becoming licensed speech-language pathologists in Texas and earning clinical certification through the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association must complete a master’s degree, while the Doctor of Audiology degree is required to practice audiology professionally. The program combines scientific study with practical learning experiences to help students develop a strong understanding of communication disorders, person-centered care, interpersonal communication, and health advocacy. Faculty members are recognized researchers, practitioners, and active members of professional organizations in the field, providing students with both academic expertise and professional mentorship. Students begin with introductory coursework in audiology, speech and hearing science, and speech and language development before progressing to advanced studies focused on the identification and treatment of hearing, speech, and language disorders. While enrolled in the program, students observe clinical services at the UNT Speech and Hearing Center, where professionals provide evaluations and interventions for articulation, language, hearing, fluency, and voice disorders. The ASLP Director of Undergraduate Studies supports students through career advising, professional development activities, and ongoing guidance. Graduates work as audiology assistants, speech-language pathology assistants, and early intervention specialists in settings such as home health agencies, school districts, hospitals, clinics, government agencies, colleges, universities, private practices, and organizations including the UNT Kristin Farmer Autism Center. The field continues to grow because of the increasing elderly population, advances in healthcare technology, greater awareness of communication disorders, and increased focus on early intervention and occupational hearing protection. Overall, the program prepares students with scientific knowledge, clinical exposure, and communication skills needed to support individuals with hearing and communication challenges across diverse professional environments.
