COURSE CURRICULUM
A major in Piano Performance at the University of North Texas prepares students for a wide range of professional careers in music by combining advanced musical training with extensive performance experience. Graduates may pursue careers as members of symphony orchestras, professional bands, solo performers, chamber musicians, studio musicians for film and television productions, church musicians, or private piano instructors. The program develops both technical mastery and artistic musicianship while helping students gain the versatility needed for professional performance environments. UNT’s strong reputation in music performance is reflected in the success of its alumni, many of whom hold prestigious positions in major orchestras and ensembles around the world. Alumni achievements include serving as assistant principal oboist with the Cleveland Orchestra, principal timpanist with the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, second flutist with the Boston Symphony Orchestra, principal cellist with the Dallas Symphony Orchestra, and principal euphoniumist with the United States Marine Band. Other graduates perform with major orchestras in cities such as Fort Worth, Atlanta, Baltimore, Chicago, Cincinnati, Houston, and Kansas City, as well as with internationally recognized orchestras and military bands across five continents. The curriculum is designed to provide students with both artistic and professional preparation through courses that strengthen performance ability, teaching methods, conducting skills, and musical understanding. Piano Literature introduces students to major keyboard works and historical repertoire, while Intermediate Piano Pedagogy focuses on teaching techniques and instructional methods for piano students. Courses such as Music as Politics encourage students to explore music within broader cultural and social contexts, and Fundamentals of Conducting develops leadership and ensemble direction skills. Theory I and applied Piano studies further strengthen technical proficiency, musicianship, and performance interpretation. Through rigorous instruction, ensemble participation, recitals, and professional performance opportunities, the Piano Performance program equips students with the knowledge, discipline, and artistic confidence needed for successful careers in both performance and music education.
