COURSE CURRICULUM

A degree in Music Performance prepares students for a wide range of professional opportunities in the music industry by developing advanced performance skills, musicianship, and artistic versatility. Graduates can pursue careers as members of symphony orchestras, professional bands, solo performers, or chamber musicians, performing in concert halls, theaters, recording studios, and other professional venues around the world. The degree also provides preparation for work as a studio musician for film and television productions, where strong technical ability and adaptability are essential. Additional career paths include becoming a church musician, private music instructor, or educator specializing in instrumental or vocal performance. The success of UNT’s Music Performance graduates is reflected in the accomplishments of its alumni, many of whom hold prestigious positions in leading orchestras and ensembles. Alumni include an assistant principal oboist with the Cleveland Orchestra, a principal timpanist with the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, a second flutist with the Boston Symphony Orchestra, a principal cellist with the Dallas Symphony Orchestra, and a principal euphoniumist with the United States Marine Band. Other graduates perform with major symphony orchestras in cities such as Fort Worth, Atlanta, Baltimore, Chicago, Cincinnati, Houston, and Kansas City, as well as with professional orchestras on five continents and all major United States military bands. The curriculum combines performance training with broader musical and professional studies to prepare students for the diverse demands of the music field. Coursework includes classes such as Sounds and Cinema, History of Rock, Music Cultures of the World, Fundamentals of Conducting, and Instrumental Pedagogy and Repertoire. These courses help students strengthen their understanding of musical traditions, conducting techniques, teaching methods, and performance practices while developing the artistic and technical skills necessary for successful professional careers in music performance and education.
