COURSE CURRICULUM

The Music Composition program at the University of North Texas offers strong academic and artistic training supported by scholarships that are awarded based on creative potential, program involvement, and academic achievement, helping talented students pursue their studies and develop their artistic voice. The College of Music is accredited by the National Association of Schools of Music, ensuring that it meets or exceeds high national standards for excellence in music education. A key feature of the program is the Spectrum concert series, which presents new solo and chamber works for instruments and voices, often incorporating emerging technologies and intermedia approaches that expand traditional compositional boundaries. Students also benefit from the Center for Experimental Music & Intermedia (CEMI), an interdisciplinary center within the Division of Composition Studies that is internationally recognized for its innovation in time-based arts and its long-standing leadership in electroacoustic music. The composition program itself is one of the largest and most diverse in the United States, with approximately 70 students and nine faculty members representing a wide range of compositional styles and artistic perspectives. Throughout the academic year, students are further supported by regular guest composer residencies, visiting new music specialists, and numerous events that provide ongoing exposure to professional practices and creative exchange. Graduates of the program pursue careers as arrangers, orchestrators, music copyists, audio engineers, conductors, and educators, working in industries such as advertising, film production, recording studios, symphony orchestras, and universities. Coursework includes subjects such as Intermediate Composition, Instrumentation, Orchestration, Music as Politics, Music Business and Entrepreneurship, and Music Cultures of the World, all designed to develop technical skill, artistic insight, and professional versatility in contemporary music composition.
