COURSE CURRICULUM
A degree in Harpsichord Performance prepares students for professional careers in music performance, accompaniment, teaching, and historical music interpretation while developing advanced technical, artistic, and collaborative skills. Graduates may pursue careers as solo performers, chamber musicians, orchestra members, continuo accompanists, church musicians, studio musicians for film and television, or private music instructors. Because harpsichordists are trained in both solo and ensemble performance, they are well prepared to work in a variety of musical environments, especially those focused on classical, Baroque, Renaissance, and early music traditions. Students develop expertise in historically informed performance practices and learn how to collaborate effectively with vocalists, orchestras, chamber ensembles, and conductors. The degree also builds strong musicianship, interpretation, sight-reading, improvisation, and communication skills that are valuable across many professional music settings. Alumni from UNT’s instrumental performance programs have achieved success with prestigious organizations around the world, including positions such as assistant principal oboist with the Cleveland Orchestra, principal timpanist with the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, second flutist with the Boston Symphony Orchestra, principal cellist with the Dallas Symphony Orchestra, and principal euphoniumist with the United States Marine Band. Other graduates perform with major orchestras in cities such as Fort Worth, Atlanta, Baltimore, Chicago, Cincinnati, Houston, and Kansas City, as well as with leading orchestras and military bands around the world. Coursework in the Harpsichord Performance degree helps students build both musical and academic expertise through classes such as Harpsichord Literature and Pedagogy, Music as Communication, Fundamentals of Conducting, Music History and Literature Since 1750, Science and Technology of Musical Sound, and individualized Harpsichord instruction. These courses combine performance training with historical study, conducting skills, sound analysis, teaching methods, and music interpretation. Overall, the degree offers students the opportunity to specialize in an important historical instrument while preparing for diverse careers in performance, education, recording, accompaniment, and professional ensemble work within the classical and early music industries.
