COURSE CURRICULUM

The Studio Art B.F.A. with a concentration in Photography at the University of North Texas offers a comprehensive, practice-based education that combines technical training, conceptual development, and professional preparation for careers in photographic and visual media fields. Students have access to extensive resources, including large-format digital printers, advanced computer labs, professional lighting studios, and fully equipped black-and-white, color, and alternative process wet labs, enabling them to work across both traditional and contemporary photographic methods. The curriculum emphasizes hands-on learning in areas such as digital imaging, darkroom photography, field photography, and experimental practices that integrate sound and moving image, while also engaging students in the history and theory of photography to strengthen critical understanding of the medium. Students are encouraged to develop a strong personal artistic voice through sustained studio practice, critique, and portfolio development, and they have opportunities to exhibit their work in on-campus galleries through juried selection processes. The program is enriched by frequent visits from nationally and internationally recognized artists, designers, and scholars who contribute lectures and workshops that broaden students’ perspectives and expose them to current professional practices in the field. Faculty members are active artists and researchers whose work has been exhibited in major museums and biennials worldwide, with some receiving prestigious honors such as Fulbright and Guggenheim Fellowships. Internship opportunities with local galleries and photographers in the Dallas–Fort Worth area allow students to gain real-world experience and build professional networks. Career pathways include fine art photography, commercial photography in fields such as advertising, fashion, editorial, portrait, and industrial work, as well as specialized roles like image editing, archiving, lighting assistance, and photo restoration. Graduates are also prepared for graduate study and careers in education, making the program a strong foundation for both creative and professional advancement in photography.
