COURSE CURRICULUM

The Studio Art B.F.A. with a concentration in New Media Art at the University of North Texas is a forward-looking program centered on experimentation, interdisciplinary collaboration, and technology-driven artistic practice. Faculty are active artists and scholars whose work has been exhibited internationally in major venues such as MoMA PS1 in New York, the Arnolfini in England, the National Museum of China, and Mejan Labs in Sweden, bringing global professional experience directly into the classroom. The program is closely connected to UNT’s Initiative for Advanced Research in Technology and the Arts, which encourages collaboration across disciplines including engineering, music, and media arts, allowing students to work at the intersection of creative practice and emerging technologies. Students also benefit from the university’s proximity to the Dallas–Fort Worth cultural region, gaining access to a vibrant professional arts ecosystem, visiting artists, and industry opportunities. Instruction takes place in state-of-the-art labs equipped with advanced tools for digital production, audio-visual work, and interactive media, with additional equipment available for student use outside of class. A Living-Learning Community further supports student development by fostering a collaborative environment among art and design majors. The curriculum includes courses in creative coding, performance and electronic media, augmented and virtual reality, analog and experimental approaches, and contemporary art theory, ensuring both technical skill-building and critical engagement with media culture. Students are trained to present work across diverse platforms, including galleries, online spaces, film festivals, performance venues, and experimental installations. Career outcomes include roles as new media artists, filmmakers, animators, game or visual designers, web designers, audio-visual creators, art directors, digital curators, and technology consultants, as well as continued graduate study. The program prepares students to operate confidently in both traditional and emerging creative industries where art and technology increasingly intersect.
