COURSE CURRICULUM

The Metalsmithing and Jewelry concentration within the Studio Art B.F.A. at the University of North Texas is supported by nationally and internationally recognized faculty who are active artists, scholars, and leaders in professional organizations, bringing contemporary industry and studio practice directly into the classroom. The program is housed within a large, well-equipped Art Building that includes dedicated studios, workshops, classrooms, computer labs, faculty offices, and a visual resources library, creating an integrated environment for both technical training and conceptual development. Students benefit from a strong academic community and access to resources that support experimentation in metalsmithing, jewelry design, and small-scale sculpture. A key feature of the program is the annual Voertman Student Art Exhibition, a juried showcase that awards scholarships and cash prizes while providing students with professional exposure and critique from practicing arts professionals. Additional scholarship opportunities arise through regional, national, and international exhibitions, helping students gain recognition beyond the university setting. The curriculum emphasizes both craftsmanship and innovation, with courses in beginning and intermediate metalsmithing and jewelry that explore color, surface, plasticity, technology, and historical craft traditions. Students are encouraged to participate in the UNT Metals Club, which organizes visiting artist workshops, exhibitions, sales events, and conference travel, further strengthening professional networks. Career outcomes include studio practice as independent metalsmiths or jewelers, roles in industrial and product design, furniture and lighting design, art dealing, sculpture, and decorative arts production, as well as entrepreneurial work in selling wearable or functional art objects. The degree also provides strong preparation for graduate study such as a Master of Fine Arts, supporting long-term careers in both fine art and applied design fields.
