The Studio Art B.F.A. with a concentration in Ceramics at the University of North Texas is supported by nationally and internationally recognized faculty who are active in leading organizations such as the National Council on Education for the Ceramic Arts and the International Academy of Ceramics, giving students direct exposure to contemporary developments in the field of ceramics and studio art. The program is housed in state-of-the-art facilities, including a 22,600-square-foot Art Annex dedicated to ceramics and a larger Art Building featuring studios, critique spaces, galleries, labs and digital fabrication resources. Students have access to advanced equipment such as 3D printers, clay printers, ram presses and industrial kilns, allowing them to combine traditional ceramic processes with modern digital production techniques. The curriculum emphasizes both artistic development and technical mastery, with coursework covering hand-building, wheel-throwing, mold-making, surface design, glaze formulation and kiln firing processes, alongside more experimental and contemporary approaches to form, function and material exploration. Students are encouraged to participate in the Clay Guild, exhibitions, visiting artist workshops and national conferences, which provide opportunities for networking, critique and professional growth. Students may pursue graduate study in fine arts or enter careers in education, where they teach in schools, universities, museums, galleries, community centers or through private instruction. The program also supports careers as independent fine artists who create and sell work through galleries, collectors, online platforms and exhibitions, often developing entrepreneurial practices alongside their artistic identity. In addition, students can move into commercial art fields such as advertising, branding, illustration and visual design, working on projects like logos, advertisements, book and magazine artwork or editorial illustration, and may advance into roles such as art direction. Broader creative career options include freelance and applied art roles such as mural painting, animation, storyboarding, portrait work, tattoo design, restoration, studio assistance, framing, art handling or visual display work in retail and cultural institutions. The curriculum emphasizes both foundational and advanced studio practice through courses in painting, drawing, figure studies, experimental approaches, thematic development and contemporary art history, helping students build technical skill alongside conceptual depth. Courses such as Painting I and II, Figure Drawing, Experimental Approaches, Series Development and Postmodern Visual Arts support the development of a professional-level portfolio and an informed understanding of modern and postmodern art contexts. Overall, the program is designed to cultivate versatile artists who can adapt to multiple creative industries while maintaining a strong personal artistic practice.
