COURSE CURRICULUM

The Financial Planning degree at the University of North Texas provides students with a strong professional foundation in personal finance, investment management, retirement planning, and wealth development while preparing them for successful careers in the financial services industry. One of the program’s major advantages is that successful completion qualifies students to sit for the highly respected Certified Financial Planner™ (CFP) exam, an industry-recognized credential valued by employers and clients across the financial planning profession. Students learn from experienced faculty members in the Department of Finance, Insurance, Real Estate and Law (FIREL), who combine professional expertise with a practical “learn today, apply tomorrow” teaching philosophy that emphasizes real-world financial applications and client-focused problem-solving. The department also offers scholarships to help support students throughout their education. Students can further strengthen their professional skills and industry connections through involvement in the UNT Student Chapter of the Financial Planning Association, which hosts guest speakers, networking opportunities, résumé and interview workshops, and career development activities with finance professionals. In addition, the Student Investment Group gives students hands-on experience managing a student-run investment portfolio, helping them apply financial analysis, investment strategies, and portfolio management techniques in practical settings. The program is part of the G. Brint Ryan College of Business, one of the nation’s largest business schools and an institution accredited by AACSB International, reflecting high academic standards and educational excellence. Graduates pursue careers with both major national financial firms and smaller local companies in positions such as paraplanner, financial planning specialist, financial planner, and retirement planner, while many advance into leadership roles including wealth manager, lead advisor, senior financial advisor, relationship manager, and firm partner. The curriculum includes courses such as Federal Income Taxation, Investments, Personal Risk Management, Retirement Planning and Employee Benefits, and Estate Planning, all designed to help students develop expertise in tax strategy, investment analysis, insurance and risk management, retirement solutions, and long-term wealth planning. Overall, the degree equips students with the financial knowledge, analytical skills, communication abilities, and professional preparation needed to help individuals and organizations achieve financial security and long-term financial success.
