COURSE CURRICULUM
The Urban Policy and Planning program at the University of North Texas is strengthened by close partnerships with city governments and planning consulting firms across the Dallas–Fort Worth region, giving students valuable opportunities to network with professionals in community development and gain hands-on field experience. These connections help bridge academic learning with real-world practice, allowing students to understand how urban planning decisions are made and implemented in active, growing metropolitan areas. The program is supported by a highly qualified faculty, including 12 nationally recognized experts who have published extensively in scholarly journals and presented their research at national conferences, contributing to both academic and professional advancement in the field. Students can choose flexible learning formats, including face-to-face, online, and blended courses, making the program accessible to a wide range of learners, including transfer students and incoming freshmen. Coursework focuses on key areas such as urban development, the historical evolution of cities, and the influence of urban space on communities, while also building technical and analytical skills in demographic data analysis, government systems, community mapping, land-use regulations, zoning laws, building design principles, and sustainability practices. This interdisciplinary training prepares students to evaluate complex urban challenges and develop effective, community-centered solutions. The curriculum is structured to ensure a smooth transition for transfer students from community colleges as well as a strong academic foundation for all learners. Urban planning is recognized by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics as a “bright outlook occupation,” reflecting strong job growth and demand in the field. Graduates are well prepared for careers in city, regional, state, and federal government agencies, consulting firms, housing authorities, nonprofit organizations, private development companies, and transportation planning. Core courses such as Urban Planning Studio, Population Demographics and Planning, Community Development and Collaborative Planning, Placemaking, Creating Innovative Cities, and Introduction to Urban and Regional Planning provide practical, applied learning experiences that develop both technical expertise and strategic thinking in shaping sustainable and livable communities.
