COURSE CURRICULUM

The Sports Journalism and Communications program at the University of North Texas Mayborn School of Journalism is positioned within the Dallas–Fort Worth metroplex, the fifth-largest media market in the United States, giving students strong access to internships and professional media networks throughout one of the country’s most competitive sports media regions. The program emphasizes hands-on training through coursework combined with practical experience in professional-grade studios, classrooms and labs, as well as extensive involvement in student-run media outlets such as the North Texas Daily, NTTV, NT Daily Radio and Denton Community Television. Students are exposed to both domestic and international media systems, including sports journalism practices across print, broadcast and digital platforms, and may participate in study abroad opportunities that broaden their understanding of global sports communication. The Mayborn School of Journalism is widely recognized for preparing students for careers in journalism and mass communication fields, with alumni working in leading media organizations across sports reporting, broadcasting, advertising, public relations and digital media. In sports journalism specifically, graduates are prepared for roles in sports broadcasting, athletic reporting, media relations, crisis communication and sports storytelling, combining editorial skill with industry knowledge. Coursework such as sports media relations, audio and video sports journalism, crisis communication, sports journalism practice and global sports media helps students develop strong reporting, production and analytical skills suited for modern sports media careers.
