COURSE CURRICULUM

The Psychology program at University of North Texas combines rigorous scientific training with practical research experience to help students understand human behavior, mental processes, and emotional development in both academic and real-world settings. Students can choose between a Bachelor of Arts degree, which offers broader elective flexibility, or a Bachelor of Science degree, which includes additional foundational science coursework and is especially recommended for students planning to pursue doctoral-level graduate study in psychology or related fields. UNT provides strong opportunities for undergraduate involvement in research through programs such as the Psychology Thesis Course, where qualified students work closely with faculty mentors and graduate students on intensive hands-on research projects. A limited number of undergraduates can also obtain research assistantships in areas such as stress and coping, anxiety, substance use, sleep research, trauma, and behavioral health. Faculty members are nationally recognized experts who have earned awards from organizations including the American Psychological Association, the Brain and Behavior Research Foundation, and the World Federation of Sleep Research Societies. Beyond academics, students can participate in social, informational, and professional development activities throughout the academic year, including involvement in Psi Chi, the national psychology honor society that promotes scholarship, internships, and community service opportunities. Graduates with a psychology degree can pursue entry-level careers in community mental health, consumer advertising, public relations, personnel management, and market research, while many continue into graduate programs leading to careers in clinical psychology, school psychology, behavioral medicine, counseling, research, law, or healthcare. Courses such as Addictive Behaviors, Psychology of Race in the U.S., Psychology of Death and Dying, Learning and Memory, and Psychology of the Offender allow students to explore specialized topics while building critical thinking, communication, and research skills that are highly valued across many professions.
