COURSE CURRICULUM

A degree in Nonprofit Leadership Studies prepares students for meaningful and competitive careers in nonprofit organizations, community agencies, and government sectors focused on public service and social impact. Graduates develop leadership, management, and communication skills that are highly valued by organizations dedicated to improving communities and addressing social challenges. Students earning this degree may pursue opportunities with major nonprofit organizations and service agencies such as the American Red Cross, Habitat for Humanity, The Humane Society, and United Way, as well as many other charitable and community-focused organizations across Texas and beyond. The program has a strong network of more than 988 alumni working in local, state, and federal government positions as well as in nonprofit organizations, demonstrating the degree’s broad career potential and strong professional connections. Coursework is designed to provide students with both theoretical understanding and practical experience in nonprofit leadership and community engagement. Students study subjects such as Leadership Theory and Practice for Volunteer Managers, which focuses on leading and coordinating volunteers effectively, and Community Development and Collaborative Planning, which explores strategies for strengthening communities through partnerships and public involvement. Additional courses such as Introduction to Philanthropy and Fundraising and Foundations of Philanthropy and Nonprofits help students understand nonprofit funding, donor relations, and organizational operations. Courses in Cultural Competency in Urban Governance prepare students to work effectively with diverse populations and communities, while Social Entrepreneurship encourages innovative approaches to solving social and economic problems through mission-driven initiatives. Overall, the program equips students with the skills needed to manage nonprofit organizations, develop community programs, lead fundraising efforts, advocate for social causes, and create positive change through ethical leadership and collaborative problem-solving in both nonprofit and public service environments.
