COURSE CURRICULUM

The Japanese degree program offers students a well-rounded academic experience that combines intensive language training with deep cultural understanding and practical learning opportunities. A distinctive feature of the program is the second-year study abroad experience, where students begin with an intensive 3½-week study period on campus before traveling together to Japan for another 3½ weeks of immersive study and firsthand cultural exposure. This structure allows students to apply their language skills in real-world contexts while gaining direct insight into Japanese society and daily life. On campus, students are encouraged to further develop their Japanese proficiency and cultural awareness through conversation groups, film series, and other interactive activities that support active language use. The university also provides strong academic support through resources such as the World Language Learning Center, which is equipped with 80 computer workstations, over 30 self-study software programs, and a wide range of multilingual audio, video, and presentation tools to enhance learning. In addition, students benefit from support services like the Career Center, Learning Center, and professional academic advisors, all of which assist with internships, employment opportunities, and long-term career planning. The program emphasizes that studying a world language not only builds communication skills but also broadens cultural perspective and strengthens analytical and interpretive abilities, which can contribute to success in subjects like math and English as well as standardized exams. Graduates of the Japanese degree program are prepared for diverse career paths in graduate studies, education, foreign service, and international business, including fields such as banking, trade, travel, and other global industries. Coursework includes subjects like Business Japanese, Japanese Cultural Expressions Through the Ages, Japanese Society Today, Japanese Food Culture, Advanced Topics in Japanese Culture, and Advanced Japanese I, all designed to build fluency, cultural literacy, and professional readiness.
