COURSE CURRICULUM

A History degree at UNT provides students with both strong academic training and access to supportive resources that help them succeed in research, writing, and analysis. Students benefit from dedicated academic support services such as the History Help Center, which assists with exam preparation and writing assignments, as well as the Kingsbury-Thomason Departmental Library and the broader University Libraries, which provide extensive research materials. Additional enrichment opportunities include participation in departmental events, annual symposia, and student organizations such as the Phi Alpha Theta history honor society, which has earned national recognition for excellence. The program is also strengthened by accomplished faculty members, including several who have been Fellows of the Texas State Historical Association and have published award-winning books, contributing to fields such as Texas history and broader historical scholarship.Career opportunities for history graduates are diverse because the degree builds strong analytical, writing, and research skills. Alumni pursue roles in museums, archives, historical societies, libraries, publishing, and advertising. Some work as consultants for organizations such as the CIA and the U.S. Department of Defense, while others become environmental historians for the National Park Service. Many graduates also go into education as teachers or continue their studies to become professional historians at the university level, which typically requires a master’s or doctoral degree. The curriculum includes a wide range of specialized courses that allow students to explore unique historical themes and topics, such as “Hollywood and the Wild West,” “War Crimes, Genocide, and Justice,” “Rise and Fall of the Slave South,” “Pirates, Smugglers, and States in the Atlantic World,” and the “Historical and Cultural Development of the Mexican-American Community.” These courses encourage students to examine history through different lenses, including cultural, political, social, and ethical perspectives. Overall, the degree equips students with both practical research abilities and a deep understanding of how the past shapes present-day societies, making it valuable for a wide range of professional and academic paths.
