COURSE CURRICULUM

An English Writing and Rhetoric degree prepares students for careers that require strong writing, communication, research, and analytical thinking skills, making it a versatile degree with opportunities across many industries and professional fields. Graduates with a Bachelor of Arts in English often pursue careers in law, publishing, education, advertising, journalism, public relations, media, and communications, where the ability to write clearly, analyze information, and communicate effectively is highly valued. Many alumni become teachers of English composition, British or American literature, or English as a Second Language in public and private schools, while others continue into competitive master’s and doctoral programs in areas such as rhetoric, literature, communication, law, and education. The degree also prepares students for creative and professional roles in writing, editing, and publishing. Alumni from English programs have achieved success in a variety of careers, including positions such as editor at Rolling Stone magazine, curator in the Rare Book Division of the New York Public Library, and public relations staff member at PricewaterhouseCoopers. Others have become accomplished novelists, poets, and screenwriters, including writers such as Karleen Koen, David Lindsey, Larry McMurtry, Chad Davidson, John Poch, and filmmaker Ken Harrison. Graduates also work within government organizations such as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the U.S. Government Printing Office, demonstrating the broad applicability of communication and rhetorical skills across both public and private sectors. The curriculum is designed to strengthen students’ understanding of writing theory, rhetoric, and advanced communication practices through courses such as Rhetorical History and Historiography, Studies in Writing, Studies in Modern Rhetoric, Advanced Studies in Writing, Special Topics in Rhetoric and Writing Studies, and Academic Writing in the Humanities. These courses help students develop expertise in persuasive communication, research, critical analysis, and professional writing while learning how language shapes ideas, culture, and public discourse. Overall, the degree equips students with adaptable and highly marketable skills that support success in professional, academic, creative, and leadership roles across a wide range of industries.
