COURSE CURRICULUM

The English Language Arts degree at the University of North Texas provides students with a strong academic foundation in literature, writing, communication, and language studies while preparing them for careers in education, publishing, media, law, public relations, and many other fields that value analytical thinking and effective communication. One of the program’s major strengths is its distinguished faculty, many of whom graduated from top graduate programs across the country and are recognized as accomplished scholars, researchers, and award-winning educators. Faculty achievements include honors such as the BBC International Short Story Award, a major U.S. State Department grant, and the National Book Critics Circle Award in Poetry, giving students the opportunity to learn from highly respected professionals in literature and creative writing. Students can become involved in organizations such as the Sigma Tau Delta international English honor society, which supports academic achievement, networking, and leadership opportunities. Creative writing students benefit from direct feedback from published writers, while the Visiting Writers Series allows students to meet and learn from accomplished authors through lectures, readings, and workshops. Students may also assist faculty with research projects or contribute to respected literary and scholarly publications such as the American Literary Review, Studies in the Novel, and Conradiana, gaining valuable editorial and research experience. Small class sizes across the program encourage close interaction with professors and collaborative learning with peers, creating a supportive and engaging academic environment. Graduates with an English Language Arts degree pursue careers in education, publishing, advertising, journalism, law, public relations, and communications, while many others continue into competitive graduate and doctoral programs nationwide. Alumni have gone on to work as editors, curators, public relations professionals, novelists, poets, screenwriters, and employees of government organizations such as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the U.S. Government Printing Office. The curriculum includes courses such as Advanced Grammar and Usage, Shakespeare, Ethnic American Literatures, American Literature to 1870, American Literature from 1870 to the Present, and Academic Writing in the Humanities, all designed to strengthen literary knowledge, critical analysis, advanced writing skills, and cultural understanding essential for both professional success and intellectual growth.
