COURSE CURRICULUM
The Biochemistry program at University of North Texas provides students with strong scientific training and research experience for careers in medicine, biotechnology, healthcare, education, and scientific research. The program prepares students for advanced study in medical, dental, veterinary, and allied health professional schools while also supporting career paths in laboratory science, pharmaceuticals, environmental science, and biotechnology industries. Students interested in becoming science educators can pursue teacher certification through the Teach North Texas program. UNT also partners with the UNT Health Science Center in a joint program that combines undergraduate education and medical school, reducing the traditional eight-year pathway to seven years and helping students save time and tuition costs. Through funding from the Howard Hughes Medical Institute, qualified junior and senior biology and biochemistry majors may participate in the Science Education Alliance Undergraduate Research Program, which provides paid laboratory research experience with active UNT researchers for up to one year. Students also benefit from the Careers in the Life Sciences program, which offers guidance on career preparation, professional skills, and opportunities to become involved in scientific research laboratories. The UNT Career Center further supports students by connecting them with internships, employment opportunities, and professional experiences through thousands of employers. Much of the program’s hands-on learning takes place in UNT’s advanced Life Sciences Complex, a state-of-the-art research facility featuring open-concept laboratories, a climate-controlled greenhouse for plant science research, and aquatics laboratories with both freshwater and saltwater systems. Graduates may pursue careers with biotechnology companies, pharmaceutical manufacturers, food and cosmetic industries, consulting agencies, environmental organizations, educational institutions, agricultural chemical companies, and independent research firms. Coursework includes subjects such as Biochemistry I, Physical Chemistry, Biotechnology, Genetics, Cell Biology, and Electricity and Magnetism, giving students a broad scientific foundation that combines biology, chemistry, physics, and laboratory research. Overall, the program combines rigorous academics, modern research facilities, and practical scientific training to prepare students for professional school, graduate study, and scientific careers in a wide range of industries.
