COURSE CURRICULUM
The Bachelor of Science in Physics with a concentration in Astrophysics at University of North Texas allows students to pursue a strong physics education while focusing on the study of astronomy, space, and the universe. The program combines advanced coursework in physics and astrophysics with hands-on research opportunities that help students understand cosmic phenomena, galaxies, stars, and the physical laws governing space. Students develop valuable marketable skills including solving open-ended scientific problems, applying structured scientific methods, analyzing complex data, communicating technical information effectively, and working independently to meet deadlines. The curriculum strengthens analytical reasoning, mathematics, computational abilities, and communication skills that are useful in both scientific and interdisciplinary careers. UNT’s experienced physics faculty are actively involved in innovative and pathfinding research, and undergraduate students often participate directly in these projects using state-of-the-art research facilities. Because of the department’s strong research environment, students gain exposure to groundbreaking scientific work while building practical experience in data analysis, experimentation, and scientific collaboration. Small upper-level class sizes allow students to receive personal attention from faculty members and work closely with peers who share similar interests. Students can also participate in the Society of Physics Students, which organizes field trips, networking opportunities, and guest speaker events. The department’s weekly Physics Colloquium further exposes students to current research and developments presented by leading professionals in physics and astrophysics. Graduates are prepared for careers in areas such as energy research, semiconductor and photonics technology, medical diagnostics, atmospheric and space sciences, education, technology, government research, and scientific communication. Many graduates continue into advanced study or careers with organizations including national laboratories, research institutions, the armed forces, and NASA. Coursework includes classes such as Stars and the Universe, Observational Astronomy, Introduction to Modern Astrophysics, Galaxies and Cosmology, Physical Optics, and Modern Classical Dynamics, providing students with both theoretical knowledge and practical scientific training for careers and graduate study in physics and astronomy.
