ABOUT UNIVERSITY

University of North Texas (UNT) is a major public research university located in the Dallas–Fort Worth metroplex in Texas, with its primary campus in Denton and an additional campus in Frisco. Established in 1890, the university has grown into one of the largest higher education institutions in the United States and serves as the flagship institution of the University of North Texas System, which also includes campuses in Dallas and Fort Worth. UNT offers a broad academic portfolio that includes 114 bachelor’s programs, 97 master’s degrees, and 39 doctoral programs across numerous fields of study. The university is recognized as an “R1: Doctoral University – Very high research spending and doctorate production” under the Carnegie Classification system, placing it among the nation’s leading research institutions. UNT is also designated as both a Hispanic-Serving Institution and a Minority-Serving Institution by the U.S. Department of Education, reflecting its diverse student population and commitment to educational access. In addition, the university has been named an Emerging Research University by the State of Texas and receives support through the Texas University Fund, a multibillion-dollar initiative designed to strengthen top public research universities in the state. As of fall 2024, UNT enrolled more than 46,000 students, making it the fourth-largest university in Texas and the largest in the Dallas–Fort Worth region. The main campus spans 963 acres and includes academic facilities, athletic complexes, and the nearby 300-acre Discovery Park research center dedicated to science, engineering, and technology innovation. UNT’s athletic teams, known as the North Texas Mean Green, compete in NCAA Division I as members of the American Conference. The university’s official colors are green and white, and its eagle mascot, Scrappy, symbolizes school pride and spirit.
