COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Science in Speech-Language Pathology at the University of New Haven is a five-semester, full-time, 63-credit graduate program designed to prepare students for professional practice in diagnosing and treating communication and swallowing disorders across diverse populations. Admission is competitive and requires a minimum undergraduate GPA of 3.0, with conditional admission possible for students with GPAs between 2.5 and 2.9 based on application strength and interview performance. Applicants must submit two letters of recommendation, a personal statement, and complete a personal interview, along with 25 hours of supervised observation under an ASHA-certified speech-language pathologist to demonstrate foundational exposure to the field. International applicants from non-English speaking countries must achieve a minimum TOEFL iBT score of 100. For students intending to work in school-based settings, Praxis exam scores are required in reading, writing, and mathematics with specified passing thresholds, and additional coursework in child or adolescent psychology and teaching students with exceptionalities is also mandatory. The curriculum combines rigorous didactic instruction with extensive clinical training, requiring students to complete a minimum of 375 hours of supervised clinical practice across the program. Students begin in the fall semester and progress through continuous coursework and clinical placements during fall, spring, and summer terms, ensuring immersive and sustained professional preparation. The program also includes specialized courses such as School-Age Language Disorders and Assessment and Intervention for Reading and Writing, along with a full-time school practicum experience that strengthens readiness for educational settings. In addition to academic and clinical requirements, students are expected to follow structured program policies outlined in the Graduate Student Handbook and adhere to the program’s strategic plan.
