COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Science in Environmental Science with a concentration in Environmental Health and Management is designed to prepare students with advanced interdisciplinary knowledge and practical skills for addressing environmental and public health challenges. The program combines environmental science, environmental chemistry, epidemiology, environmental management, and scientific research to help students understand the relationship between environmental conditions and human health while developing effective strategies for environmental protection and sustainability. Students begin with core courses that provide foundational training in environmental law, environmental geoscience, ecological applications, scientific literature and proposal writing, and data analysis in environmental and biological sciences. These courses strengthen students’ abilities in scientific communication, environmental assessment, ecological analysis, laboratory methods, and interpretation of environmental and biological data. Students pursuing the Environmental Health and Management concentration complete specialized required courses in Environmental Health, Environmental Chemistry, and Principles of Epidemiology, along with a choice between Environmental Effects of Pollutants or Environmental Microbiology. These courses provide detailed understanding of environmental contaminants, disease patterns, public health principles, environmental toxicology, pollution impacts, and microbial influences on environmental systems and human health. Students may further specialize through elective coursework in areas such as air pollution fundamentals, environmental reports and impact assessment, geographical information systems, forensic toxicology, biostatistical applications in public health, professional communication, and independent study research. The program includes a capstone requirement that may be completed through an Internship, a Research Project, or a Thesis sequence consisting of Thesis I and Thesis II, depending on the student’s academic and professional goals. Students interested in advanced research or doctoral study are encouraged to pursue the thesis option under faculty supervision, while internship and research project tracks provide practical environmental and public health experience. Many courses also include laboratory sessions, scientific analysis, fieldwork, and applied environmental investigations that provide hands-on training and real-world problem-solving experience. Through interdisciplinary coursework, research opportunities, and applied environmental studies, students develop expertise in environmental health assessment, environmental management, pollution analysis, epidemiology, environmental compliance, and public health protection. Graduates are prepared for careers in environmental consulting, environmental health and safety, public health agencies, environmental compliance and regulation, environmental risk assessment, sustainability management, nonprofit organizations, research institutions, and government agencies, as well as for advanced doctoral-level study in environmental science, environmental health, and related disciplines.
