COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Science in Environmental Engineering at University of New Haven provides students with advanced education and technical training in environmental systems, pollution control, water and wastewater treatment, environmental law, and sustainable engineering practices. The curriculum is designed to equip students with the scientific, analytical, and engineering skills needed to solve complex environmental challenges related to water resources, hazardous waste management, environmental protection, and infrastructure resilience. The program includes two required courses: Physical-Chemical Treatment of Aqueous Wastes, which focuses on treatment technologies used in water and wastewater engineering, and Environmental Law and Legislation, which examines the legal and regulatory frameworks governing environmental engineering practice and environmental protection policies. In addition to the required coursework, all students must complete a research requirement through one of several options, including a Research Project, a Civil and Environmental Engineering Internship, or a thesis sequence consisting of Thesis I and Thesis II. The thesis option is particularly beneficial for students interested in advanced research or future doctoral study and requires completion of both thesis courses in sequential order unless the thesis is successfully defended after one semester. The remainder of the program consists of elective coursework that allows students to specialize in areas such as environmental chemistry, biological treatment processes, contaminant transport, aqueous chemistry, solid waste management, air pollution control, advanced wastewater treatment, groundwater hydrology, hazardous waste treatment, hydrology, open channel hydraulics, sustainable engineering, infrastructure resilience, and geographic information systems. Students can customize their studies according to their professional interests and career goals in environmental engineering and sustainability. The university also offers an online version of the M.S. Environmental Engineering program in which students complete a structured set of asynchronous mini-term courses covering topics such as water quality management, hazardous waste treatment, open channel hydraulics, pollution prevention management, environmental law, biological treatment systems, and contaminant transport. Through coursework, applied projects, internships, and research opportunities, students develop expertise in designing treatment and remediation systems, understanding environmental regulations, and applying engineering principles to complex environmental systems. Graduates are prepared for careers in environmental consulting, water and wastewater engineering, environmental compliance, sustainability management, government agencies, infrastructure planning, and environmental research and development.
