COURSE CURRICULUM

The graduate program in Emergency Management is designed to prepare students for leadership and professional roles in disaster preparedness, hazard mitigation, emergency response, recovery planning, and public safety administration. The curriculum combines theoretical knowledge, applied research, strategic planning, and practical emergency management skills to help students effectively address natural disasters, public emergencies, and complex crisis situations affecting communities and organizations. The program requires 24 credits of core coursework that provides comprehensive training in emergency management principles, disaster response systems, hazard mitigation strategies, social dimensions of disasters, and emergency incident management. Required courses include Principles of Emergency Management, which introduces the foundations of the field; Principles and Practices of Hazard Mitigation, focusing on reducing disaster risks and vulnerabilities; Catastrophe Readiness and Response, which examines planning and response strategies for large-scale emergencies; and Holistic Disaster Recovery, which emphasizes sustainable recovery and community resilience following disasters. Students also complete coursework in Social Dimensions of Disaster to understand how social, cultural, and community factors influence disaster preparedness and recovery, as well as Emergency Incident Management, which focuses on coordination, leadership, and operational management during emergency incidents. For the program’s culminating experience, students choose between two pathways. The thesis option includes Emergency Management Thesis Proposal and Research along with Emergency Management Thesis Writing and Defense, allowing students to conduct independent scholarly research on a specialized emergency management topic under faculty supervision. Alternatively, students may complete the Emergency Management Research Project together with Strategic Planning for Public Safety Leaders, which focuses on applied research, leadership development, and strategic planning within public safety and emergency management organizations. In addition to the required courses, students complete 12 credits of elective coursework selected in consultation with an academic advisor to align with their professional interests and career goals. Through this combination of academic study, research, and applied planning, graduates develop strong analytical, managerial, and technical skills necessary for careers in emergency management agencies, disaster response organizations, homeland security, public safety departments, nonprofit relief organizations, healthcare systems, and government emergency planning and recovery operations.
