COURSE CURRICULUM

The Counseling graduate program at the University of New Haven is designed to prepare students for professional careers in clinical mental health counseling through a combination of theoretical study, practical counseling skills, research training, and supervised field experience. The curriculum emphasizes ethical practice, multicultural awareness, psychological assessment, crisis intervention, and evidence-based counseling approaches that help students work effectively with individuals, families, and groups across diverse populations. Students begin by developing a strong academic and professional foundation through courses such as Research Methods, Career Counseling and Development, Life Span Human Development, and Theories of Counseling. Advanced coursework focuses on professional orientation, counseling techniques, family therapy, group counseling, mental health diagnosis and treatment, addiction and substance abuse counseling, trauma and crisis intervention, multicultural and diversity issues, and psychological assessment. These courses help students understand human behavior, emotional development, communication strategies, and therapeutic interventions while strengthening their ability to evaluate and respond to complex mental health challenges. The program also places a major emphasis on experiential learning and professional preparation through Counseling Practicum, Counseling Internship I, and Counseling Internship II, where students gain supervised real-world clinical experience in counseling and behavioral health settings. The General Concentration allows students to personalize their education by selecting four elective courses totaling 12 credits from areas such as psychology, sociology, criminal justice, public administration, or public health. This interdisciplinary structure enables students to explore related fields connected to counseling practice, community services, healthcare systems, social policy, behavioral sciences, or public health concerns. Through this flexible approach, students can tailor the program toward career interests such as community mental health, trauma services, addiction counseling, rehabilitation support, crisis response, social advocacy, or integrated healthcare environments. The program develops essential competencies in communication, ethical decision-making, cultural competence, research literacy, and professional counseling practice. Graduates are prepared for counseling careers in hospitals, mental health clinics, nonprofit organizations, schools, rehabilitation centers, correctional facilities, community agencies, and private practice settings, while also building the academic and clinical foundation necessary for professional licensure and advanced doctoral study in counseling or related behavioral health disciplines.
