COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Public Health (MPH) program at the University of New Haven is a 42-credit graduate degree designed to prepare future public health professionals with strong competencies in disease prevention, health promotion, policy development, and community engagement. The program emphasizes evidence-based practice, interdisciplinary collaboration, and ethical decision-making to address complex population health challenges. It equips students with skills in epidemiology, biostatistics, health systems analysis, program planning, and evaluation, while also strengthening their ability to work across sectors to improve health outcomes and reduce inequities. The curriculum is structured into 36 core credits and 6 restricted elective credits, ensuring both breadth and specialization. Core courses include foundational public health training such as PUBH 6600 Foundations of Public Health, PUBH 6615 Principles of Epidemiology, PUBH 6625 Biostatistical Applications in Public Health, PUBH 6610 Research Methods in Public Health, PUBH 6650 Public Health Advocacy and Policy, PUBH 6660 Public Health Practice and Planning, and PUBH 6665 Program Evaluation, alongside professional skills development sequences (PUBH 6601 and PUBH 6602). Students also complete coursework in behavioral and social determinants of health (PUBH 6620), health systems (PUBH 6655), and either advanced epidemiology (PUBH 6687) or environmental epidemiology (PUBH 6630). The program culminates in either a capstone project or applied internship (PUBH 6690 or PUBH 6695), followed by an integrative learning experience (PUBH 6699), which demonstrates mastery of public health competencies. For specialization, students select two restricted electives from areas such as global health, public health nutrition, digital health, health disparities, emergency preparedness, and health analytics. Overall, the MPH program prepares graduates to design, implement, and evaluate public health programs and policies, produce high-quality analytical reports, and apply population-level thinking to improve health outcomes in diverse communities.
