COURSE CURRICULUM

The University of New Haven Physician Associate Program is structured to prepare graduate students for entry into the Physician Associate profession with a strong emphasis on producing competent, ethical, and patient-centered clinicians who are ready to function in modern healthcare environments. The program’s overarching goals focus on developing graduates who are clinically prepared for entry-level practice, who demonstrate professionalism within a supportive academic environment, and who consistently prioritize patient-centered care. These aims are translated into a detailed competency framework that guides student learning and evaluation across multiple domains essential to medical practice. In the Medical Knowledge domain, students are expected to integrate biomedical, clinical, behavioral, and social science principles to support accurate diagnosis and treatment decisions while also using evidence-based guidelines and critically appraising emerging research to continuously improve patient care. Clinical Reasoning and Problem-Solving competencies emphasize the ability to analyze complex patient data, synthesize clinical findings, and construct appropriate diagnostic and therapeutic strategies, including interpretation of diagnostic testing to refine clinical judgments. Clinical Skills training ensures that students can competently perform patient histories and physical examinations, generate differential diagnoses, and develop evidence-based management plans while maintaining accurate and professional documentation. Technical and Procedural Skills focus on safe and effective execution of clinical procedures, appropriate use of medical instruments, and proper reporting of procedural outcomes in compliance with legal standards. Interpersonal Skills stress clear, compassionate, and culturally sensitive communication with patients, families, and healthcare teams, as well as effective participation in interprofessional collaboration. Finally, Professional Behaviors emphasize integrity, ethical practice, confidentiality, accountability, responsiveness to feedback, and lifelong learning, ensuring graduates meet the professional standards expected of healthcare providers.
