COURSE CURRICULUM
The Master’s program in Community Psychology provides students with advanced academic training and practical experience focused on understanding and addressing social, behavioral, and mental health challenges within communities and organizations. The required curriculum includes core courses such as Foundations of Community Psychology, Statistics for Psychological Science, Research Methods, Program Evaluation, and two semesters of Intervention and Consultation Fieldwork and Seminar, which allow students to gain direct professional experience in community-based settings. Students also study Social Inequalities in Organizations to better understand how systemic and institutional factors influence human behavior and social well-being. In addition to the required courses, students complete two elective courses selected from disciplines such as psychology, counseling, sociology, criminal justice, public administration, or public health, allowing for interdisciplinary learning and specialization. The concentration in Community Mental Health is specifically designed for students interested in careers within community-based human service and mental health organizations. This concentration emphasizes prevention, intervention, and treatment strategies aimed at addressing psychological and emotional problems at both the individual and community levels. Students learn how social institutions, organizations, and group environments influence mental health outcomes and develop the skills needed to provide effective support in diverse settings. To complete the concentration, students choose three specialized counseling courses that may include Life Span Human Development, Theories of Counseling, Diagnosis and Treatment of Mental Health Disorders, Addiction and Substance Abuse Counseling, and Trauma and Crisis Intervention. These courses provide knowledge of human development, counseling theories, mental health diagnosis, addiction treatment, and crisis response strategies. Through a combination of academic coursework, applied research, and supervised fieldwork experiences, the program prepares graduates for professional roles in mental health agencies, nonprofit organizations, healthcare systems, social service institutions, crisis intervention programs, and other community-focused settings where they can support psychological wellness and social change.
