COURSE CURRICULUM
The Bachelor’s degree in National Security combines a broad University Core Curriculum with specialized coursework in national security, intelligence analysis, economics, law, and international affairs to prepare students for careers in government, defense, intelligence agencies, homeland security, and global policy analysis. Students complete 40 credits of University Core Curriculum that develop foundational skills in academic writing, communication, mathematics, science, psychology, history, foreign language, and creative arts while strengthening critical thinking and interdisciplinary learning abilities. Tier 2 requirements further enhance professional writing and analytical skills through advanced coursework such as Writing for Business and Industry and additional elective competencies. The major coursework focuses specifically on the structure, operations, and strategic functions of national security systems and the United States security enterprise. Students begin with introductory studies in national security and national security law before progressing into specialized topics such as intelligence analysis, national security reporting, quantitative applications, critical thinking, and strategic problem-solving. The curriculum examines how governments respond to contemporary security challenges through policy development, intelligence gathering, legal frameworks, economic strategies, and operational planning. Courses in intelligence analysis and quantitative applications help students develop analytical skills necessary for evaluating security threats, interpreting data, and making informed policy recommendations. The program also emphasizes communication and professional readiness through reporting, internship preparation, and real-world field experiences. Students complete a national security internship that provides practical exposure to professional environments related to intelligence, defense, law enforcement, or security operations, along with a capstone course that integrates knowledge and skills gained throughout the program. Additional coursework in macroeconomics and foreign language study strengthens students’ understanding of global systems, diplomacy, and international communication. Restricted electives allow students to further specialize in areas such as criminal justice, political science, homeland security, economics, or history, creating flexibility for individual career goals and interests. Students also complete 33 credits of general electives, allowing opportunities for interdisciplinary study and career customization. Overall, the program equips graduates with strong analytical, communication, leadership, and policy development skills needed to address modern national and international security challenges while preparing them for careers in intelligence services, homeland security agencies, federal government, military support operations, policy research, emergency management, and international affairs.
