COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Science in Public Health combines a comprehensive University Core Curriculum with specialized coursework in healthcare, epidemiology, health promotion, research, and public health administration to prepare students for professional careers focused on improving community health and preventing disease. Students complete the University Core Curriculum with specific requirements in mathematics, biology, psychology, nutrition, research writing, food science, bioethics, and the U.S. healthcare system to establish a strong scientific and healthcare foundation. The program’s required major courses provide in-depth training in public health principles, epidemiology, health economics, environmental health, global health, health communication, healthcare systems, and public health administration. Students begin by exploring health professions and the foundations of public health before progressing into more advanced subjects such as social determinants of health, injury prevention, health promotion strategies, and research methods for health sciences. Coursework in epidemiology and statistics helps students learn how to collect, analyze, and interpret health-related data to identify disease patterns and public health challenges. Students also study environmental and global health issues, gaining an understanding of how social, economic, environmental, and cultural factors affect population health across local and international communities. Communication and leadership skills are emphasized through courses in public health communication, program planning, administration, and evaluation, preparing students to work effectively within healthcare systems and interprofessional teams. Practical learning experiences are an essential part of the curriculum and include a public health internship that allows students to apply classroom knowledge in professional healthcare or community settings. The program concludes with a capstone course where students integrate research, analytical, and problem-solving skills to address real-world public health concerns. In addition to major requirements, students complete 33 credits of free electives that provide flexibility to explore additional academic interests or career-related subjects. Through its combination of scientific training, research experience, public health education, and practical application, the program prepares graduates for careers in public health agencies, hospitals, nonprofit organizations, community health programs, healthcare administration, environmental health, health education, and policy development while also providing strong preparation for graduate study in public health, healthcare management, epidemiology, and related health science disciplines.
