COURSE CURRICULUM

1The Bachelor of Science in Homeland Security is an interdisciplinary program designed to prepare students for careers in national security, border protection, emergency response, criminal investigation, intelligence analysis, and counterterrorism. The curriculum combines criminal justice, national security studies, psychology, communication, law, and emergency management to provide students with both theoretical knowledge and practical skills needed to protect the homeland from terrorism, organized crime, natural disasters, and other security threats. Students complete a 40-credit University Core Curriculum that includes academic writing, communication, mathematics, laboratory science, psychology, history, creative arts, and Spanish language study, emphasizing cultural awareness and communication skills important for homeland security careers. Major coursework introduces students to criminal justice systems, national security operations, criminal law, criminal procedure, quantitative analysis, and critical thinking. Specialized homeland security electives allow students to focus on border security, transportation security, maritime security, domestic terrorism, political violence, insurgencies, weapons of mass destruction, and homeland security practices. The program also includes professional preparation through pre-internship training and a supervised internship experience, giving students real-world exposure to homeland security operations and investigative procedures. Students learn how to assess threats, develop response and recovery strategies, investigate homeland security incidents, and protect critical infrastructure and transportation systems. The recommended Spanish minor further strengthens communication skills for careers in agencies dealing with immigration, customs enforcement, and border protection. Graduates are prepared for careers in organizations such as the United States Department of Homeland Security, U.S. Customs and Border Protection, United States Border Patrol, law enforcement departments, intelligence agencies, transportation security organizations, emergency management agencies, and private security firms. Career opportunities may include homeland security officer, intelligence analyst, customs officer, border patrol agent, transportation security specialist, criminal investigator, emergency management coordinator, and counterterrorism analyst. The program develops strong analytical, investigative, communication, leadership, and decision-making abilities essential for protecting national security and responding effectively to evolving domestic and international threats.
