COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Science in Health Sciences at University of New Haven provides students with a strong interdisciplinary foundation in healthcare, combining science, healthcare systems knowledge, communication, leadership, and practical professional training. The program requires completion of a 40-credit University Core Curriculum that develops skills in writing, communication, mathematics, ethics, psychology, cultural awareness, and healthcare understanding through courses such as English composition, Principles of Communication, statistics for health sciences, bioethics, food and nutrition, and Introduction to the U.S. Healthcare System. The major curriculum focuses on preparing students for careers or graduate study in clinical and non-clinical healthcare fields by covering subjects including epidemiology, healthcare law and regulation, healthcare leadership, health economics and finance, cultural competence, health research design, and professional healthcare communication. Students also complete Health Sciences Experience I, an internship course that provides hands-on exposure to real healthcare environments, along with a senior capstone course that integrates academic knowledge and practical application. The science component includes biology, anatomy and physiology, microbiology, genetics or cell biology, and physics courses, giving students a comprehensive understanding of human health, body systems, and scientific principles relevant to healthcare professions. Students may also choose courses in multicultural psychology, health psychology, or medical sociology to strengthen their understanding of patient behavior, social health factors, and healthcare diversity. The program includes 18 credits of concentration requirements and 18 credits of electives, allowing students to customize their academic pathway according to career interests or graduate school goals. This flexibility supports students pursuing careers in healthcare administration, medicine, public health, healthcare research, rehabilitation services, and other health-related professions. Graduates leave the program with scientific knowledge, professional communication skills, leadership abilities, and practical healthcare experience that prepare them for the demands of the modern healthcare workforce and advanced professional study.
